CARE
SUGGESTIONS REGARDING CARE IN HANDLING AND STORAGE OF SHUTTERING PLYWOOD

Under optimum conditions Durocon Shuttering Plywood is expected to give about 25 to 30 reuses. However, number of reuses are directly co-related with the care in handling and storage to be taken by the users at the worksite. The users are advised to refer to BIS Specifications No. IS : 4990 : 1993 Appendix-C which deals with the recommended methods of handling, storing and uses of plywood for concrete shuttering and form work. Nevertheless, a few important suggestions are offered as under:

UNLOADING >>

Unload the panels carefully from the truck by lifting a few sheets at a time and carrying rather than sliding them.

Stack the sheets on a flat level and raised surface in a clean, dry and covered place with good cross-ventilation. Protect the panels from exposure to rain and dampness.

<< STACKING
AVOIDING DAMAGE >>

Avoid damage to corners and faces during unloading and subsequent handling. Do not drop panels, nor drag them one over another. Special care to be taken in the case of Coated and Film Faced types.

For best results, use the plywood in the form of standard form work panels fixed on steel or wooden frames. The plywood may be cut to standard sizes and framed. Avoid nailing or screwing through the face of the plywood. Where, however, this is done, take care not to damage the plywood face and fill holes, if any, with a putty. Do not use very long nails or too many nails.

<< PREPARING FRAMED
        PANELS
USING PLYWOOD WITHOUT
A FRAMEWORK
>>

Place the plywood sheets with the face grain running perpendicular to the supporting bearers, to obtain the maximum strength and stiffness.

When cut into smaller panels, at site, the exposed edges of the plywood should be sealed with a synthetic varnish or aluminium paint. This will prevent water from entering the sheet and causing the veneers to swell and thicken the plywood at the edges.

<< EDGE SEALING
PROTECTIVE COATING/ RELEASE       AGENTS >>

Coat all the form work panels with mould oil before initial use and preferably after 2 uses, subsequently. If the panels are left unused for a long time, recoating before the next use is essential. A typical mould oil is heavy mineral oil or purified cylinder oil. Do not use too much mould oil. A thin, evenly applied film, well worked into the surface, is sufficient, and this is best done with a sponge or mop. Avoid using a hard brush. Never allow the mould oil to puddle or drain into corners, as this can cause delay in the setting of the concrete and staining. For economic application, the mould oil may be sprayed.

Cover the form work after erection to prevent rains washing off the oil coating or contamination of the form face by rust from the reinforcement or dirt. In case cleaning the form face becomes necessary, use an airhose. Do not use a waterhose.

<< PROTECTING THE FORM
          WORK
POURING OF CONCRETE >>

Load the form work evenly while pouring concrete. Pour the concrete uniformly and in one continuous operation at a rate not exceeding 2m/hour, vertically. Use a movable baffle to protect from faces while pouring concrete. Use internal poker vibrators.

Do not strike the forms using metal crowbars, levers, etc. during stripping. Use wooden edges between concrete and form work for easing the panels. Strip the form work as soon as the concrete has gained sufficient strength to resist damage.

<< STRIPPING
CLEANING >>

Clean all the panels thoroughly after each use, using a waterhose or a rag dipped in water. Take care not to damage the plywood face. Do not use metal scrapers or wire brushes. Do not allow the panels to dry too rapidly after cleaning.

Repair any damage to the plywood face immediately after cleaning and drying. In the case of DUROCON Coated Plywood, repair any damage to the surface film by applying three coats of a synthetic varnish. Use the reverse side if the surface damage is extensive. Fill nail holes, etc. with a wooden plug or putty.

<< REPAIR
STORAGE >>

Stack the used panels after cleaning and repair on level supports off the ground under cover. Framed form work panels should be stacked alternately face to face and back to back to avoid damage. For easy retrieval, the panels should be stacked according to size or type and marked with easy to read identification numbers or letters.
